Collage 2019-Present

The Collage Project brings together the collecting of found imagery from my own personal photography and places and items of historical, social and cultural significance that resonate with me on a visual or emotional level.

I build connections between my experiences walking around London, its landscapes and the items of interest to create playful and energetic images portraying my personal memories of these places.

Here Comes The Sun; Digitally manipulated photography on paper; Edition of 13; 70cm x 50cm.

My Future; Digitally manipulated photography on paper; Hand-finished spray painted; Edition of 13 (all unique); 70cm x 50cm.

The pathway to making art should reflect what you enjoy, and for me this is studying the art from the past and its history.

The walks I go on to get to the Tate and other art galleries in London allow me to put areas under a microscope. Visually understanding those pathways, I have taken over time and looking at how those interesting locations are juxtaposed in the quiet interiors of the Tate – one of the centres of art and art history.

In essence, this work brings the outside walks into the interior of the Tate.

Popeye; Original Watercolour on paper; 69cm x 50cm; £250 (unframed)

This work was born out of my frustration with my art practice and the art world – a feeling of smashing my head against a wall. Being an artist and trying to bring my art to people’s attention.

Originally entitled ‘F*ck off’, the piece eventually took on a more light-hearted stance, using the Popeye cartoon images from old wallpaper and some paintings and drawings of found objects and toys.

Through the process of making the work, I established that what was important was for people to enjoy it - by using more recognisable and relatable objects, they would be able to understand and appreciate it more.

By creating and selling this work, I proved to myself that ‘breaking in’ was really just about making good work, being happy with creative results, and enjoying the response from people who bought it.
